Beyond the secret door that Avery found, they found a short tunnel with stairs that exited into a a natural tunnel system, all of which slopped downward. The first chamber that they entered had two tunnels leading off from it, one near them, but that one was collapsed. Remembering some notes found in the leaders room about illusions, they had Avery check the collapse to see if it was really a collapse, or an illusion, and it was indeed the later.
With the illusion broken, the trap the smugglers set was sprung as the smugglers attack form the tunnels, some moving into melee others staying at range. The illusionist tried to stay at range, but as the party made their way through the smugglers and gnoll allies, he retreated though the tunnels. At one point along the tunnel, an assassin dropped his concealment an tried to kill the (Tuvok or Patrin don’t remember). Tuvok continued to follow while Patrin dealt with the assassin, who quickly surrendered. Tuvok entered the last chamber of the complex just in time to hear a splash, as the illusionist exited the chamber into the sea beyond.
With the smugglers defeated, they turned to interrogating the assassin, a man named Ned. Ned explained that he was only hired by someone in the town, and that if they let him go, he would give them his contact. He also explained he had real knowledge of the smuggling ring, only having been hired literally two days before for this job, though he had worked for the contact before. After a short conversation, they accepted the offer, as long as he wrote everything down. He also knew the name of the leader, an illusionist named Sanbalet.
Ned wrote his affidavit, implicating Redric as his contact in town.
While interrogating Ned, others were cataloging the goods the smugglers had. There were thousands of gold worth of brandy and silk.
Returning to town, they reported to Dimitri that the place was cleared out, and then went to the Garrison to report about the smugglers. After a little bit of red tape, they got a meeting with Walthus Kang, who listened to their story. Apparently Redric has an already dubious reputation, and he put some undercover guards to watch him. He also arranged for a meeting with the town council in the morning.
At the town meeting, held at the lord mayor’s manor, they once again explained what hat occurred at the house. Afterword, the council took a moment to talk between themselves and then decide to follow Kang’s suggestion to observe Redric for the time being. They also agreed to allow them to sell the contraband, but with a hefty 25% excise.
